Who Are We?

We are glad and grateful that you are with us, and we hope that your experience here enriches your life.

Over the decades, First Church has been known as the “friendly church on the hill”. Rich in tradition and history, First Church is also importantly aware that we, the people, need to be rich in the “gifts of the spirit” – “love, joy, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control” (Galatians 5:22).

We warmly welcome you to First Church Congregational! Worship with us on Sunday mornings at 10:00 AM.  Bring your children to the renowned non-denominational Chapel Preschool during the week.  Enjoy a delicious homemade turkey dinner at our annual community George Washington Birthday Dinner or simply stop by to say “Hello."  Whatever God has in store for you, know that whoever you are . . . or wherever you are . . . on your journey of life, you are always welcomed here!

We are a progressive, inclusive mainline Protestant church, a member of the United Church of Christ (UCC).   We are actively involved in the Northeast Association of the Southern New England Conference, UCC. Also, we seek to be in conversation with other faith communities in the area and provide interfaith and ecumenical opportunities for connection.

The Sacrament of Communion is observed on the first Sunday of each month and other times during the liturgical church year. The Sacrament of Baptism is celebrated in the context of worship and offered by request to those seeking baptism for children, youth or adults. (see section on Baptism to learn more).

A highlight of our church life is our music program!  We invite anyone who wishes to join our church choir and/or our handbell choir.  (see Music section).  Another highlight of life together, is the regular participation in outreach to our local community and global family.  The Christian Education program at First Church invites children/youth to Sunday School during the academic year and we offer a Children's message in worship each Sunday.  In the rear of our sanctuary, we have an activity area designated for young children and their families to use during our worship service.

Please come and check us out!  We desire to be a "church family"  growing in faith and service and celebrating our mission:

"to seek God, to care for one another and to improve our community."
